Finally! After 4 months of being online, we have a fish page!
The link below is just the start. This will be the hardest page to do in the entire site, as fishies are a technical
thing and water parameters require a little bit of science and math.
Bear with me, I still write notes in crayon.....
Introduction - Fish 101 - Freshwater Aquariums
There are tons of topics I'll have to cover before I even begin to feel like the
fish section has been partly addressed. However, no matter the type of fish or aquarium you have, a few basics can make
the difference between a successful tank and a messy, algae-covered cesspool. They are the following.
1.) Purchase fish that are compatible with each other and to the type of water you
have.
2.) Make sure the filters you have successfully work as biological, mechanical,
and chemical (if needed) filters.
3.) Feed your fish accordingly, the right amounts, the right types of food, and at
the right times.
4.) Change that damned water!!!! Yes, you, the one picking his nose in Nebraska
reading this........ahem. Frequent water changes are easy, and if you have the right equipment, quick. I can do
a 25% water change in my 75 gallon aquarium in less than 15 minutes.
5.) Monitor your fish daily so that you'll know when something's wrong.
6.) If you have live plants like I do, get the right lighting.
I'm serious. There's really little else to it if you have a basic aquarium.
Sure, you'll have to diagnose some diseases, but that's not so hard when you do a little research. I'll be setting up
a medicine page in the near future so you know what you can use for what disease on what fish. Example? Nothing
with salt or a salt derivative should ever be used full strength in a tank with corydoras. I'll do my best to give the
basics to you, and hopefully Lee from Aquarium Paradise in Tacoma will help us as he's helped me in the past.
